Assoc Prof Kaaren Mathias
Kaaren Mathias is a public health physician and researcher with a broad range of research interests, including participation, inclusion, and mental health in communities.
She works and conducts research in public health in both New Zealand and India. While she employs mixed methods in her research, she has a particular preference for qualitative research, appreciating its complexity and nuance.
Kaaren Mathias is actively engaged in public health in New Zealand and India and supports the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine as a Training Programme Supervisor. She is the founder and director of Burans (www.burans.org), where she has led the development of various interventions, including Nae Disha, Nae Umeed, and Swasthya Labh Saadan. These initiatives have been adopted and scaled by other non-profits. Notably, Nae Disha, a youth mental health and resilience intervention, was adopted, adapted, and scaled by the National Institutes of Disability across India.
