Nikki Moreland

Dr Nikki Moreland is a Senior Lecturer in immunology and biomedical scientist at the University of Auckland. She obtained her PhD from the University of Auckland and spent her post-doctoral years in the UK, Singapore and Auckland. She is fascinated by the human immune system, especially the role of antibodies in health and disease. Her main research focus is rheumatic fever, which can develop after a bacterial infection with Streptococcus A. Her laboratory is working to understand how the immune system becomes dysregulated in children with rheumatic fever, and identify new biomarkers to improve diagnosis of the disease. This is enabled by meaningful collaborations with colleagues across New Zealand and internationally, who share a collective goal to translate research findings into clinical practice and facilitate improved health outcomes for communities affected by rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
